In the course the romantic landscape garden was adopted in America. Thomas Jefferson's remodeling of hte Monticello gardens (Fig.1 ) and the simple lawn and plantations introduced at Mount Vernon in 1737 (Fig. 2 ) are early indications of a change in American taste. Some of the first completely new landscape gardens were designed by Andre Parmentier ,a Belgain who estab-lished a nursery in Brooklyn in 1824.In 1828 he wrote an essay praising the picturesque stlye and opposing the formalism then prevalent in America. He subsequently laid out the grounds of sev-eral large estates along the Hudson River before his death in 1830.
